When it comes to writing, most of us rely more on our brains than our bodies. But what if it actually worked better the other way around? What if our brains, while effective at handling multiple tasks and matters of logic, were actually less creative than our bodies? What if our bodies held the key to our most imaginative ideas and most authentic voice?
Ready to test it?
Before you sit down to write, try the following exercise. I call it “Help Me Write Hula.” It’s the perfect way to relax and open up your pelvic region, the 2nd Chakra area, and the seat of your creativity.
Start by planting your feet hip-distance apart, knees slightly bent. Keeping your spine straight and knees unlocked, start by swiveling your hips first in one direction and then the other. To make it even more fun, put on some hip grinding music and sing out loud. Get a little wild, chakra it all about, and allow joy to fill your body.
When your heart is pounding and you’re breathing a little hard, get ready to write with your whole being, firm in that which you are, planted in your own genius, speaking from your own voice, and spilling your own brand of energy onto the page.
Onward!
